The case shook up a community not used to seeing crime tape.

A security guard at a Marina del Rey apartment complex – management called him a “security patrol officer” because he was apparently not licensed – was fatally shot in a parking lot the day before New Year's Eve.

Detectives said all along that this was not a random act. In fact, they knew something we did not. They had the suspect they wanted behind bars the day after the crime:

Byron Keith Street, a 47-year-old from Inglewood, was arrested on New Year's Eve on suspicion of felony fraud after Sheriff's officials looking into the case had the cuffs put on him, the department said.

He remained behind bars.

Yesterday, after nearly a month investigation, Street was charged with suspicion of murder, burglary, felony vandalism, and being a felon in possession of a firearm, the Sheriff's Department announced.

While cops aren't saying what the motive might have been, keep in mind that there were reports that cars in the lot had been vandalized before the murder of 47-year-old Patrick Odoikyene at The Shores complex at 4201 Via Marina.

Street was due to appear at LAX court tomorrow for arraignment. He was being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

[Update at 5:22 p.m.]: The District Attorney's office today alleged that Street committed murder “during the course of a burglary,” a special circumstance added to the prosecutor's filing. That means the case might be eligible for the death penalty if prosecutors are successful.

Besides murder, Street faced allegations of first-degree murder and vandalism.

The D.A. says the suspect and his girlfriend, 23-year-old Ann Una Bailey, were also charged Jan. 3 with suspicion of false impersonation and theft. They pleaded not guilty.

As for a possible motive, the D.A.'s office said this in a statement this afternoon:

Street, a former security guard at an apartment complex on the 4200 block of Via Marina Drive in Marina del Rey, is alleged to have killed Patrick Odoi-Kyene on Dec. 30, 2013. The defendant had previously been suspended by Odoi-Kyene, his immediate supervisor, for bringing his girlfriend to work.

Prosecutors say Street is actually being held without bail.
