Busy weekend of music ahead, one of the most action-packed of the season. We, in fact, are being pulled in about six different directions. Tonight, if you're lucky and/or connected, you may be at Thom Yorke and band's first ever show, which is at the Echoplex.
Across town in Pasadena, David Byrne is talking “cities, bicycles and the future of getting around.” Maybe he'll ride over to the Echoplex afterward. Or maybe he'll head to Hollywood to see Amadou & Miriam, which is where at least one West Coast Sound operative will be.
RIO EN MEDIO “Last Child's Tear” (dublab VisionVersion) from dublab on Vimeo.
Before that, though, we'll be checking out films at the Downtown Independent by dublab, which is in the middle of celebrating its tenth anniversary.
Saturday: The entire fate of classical music rests on the shoulders of a 28-year-old Venezuelan named Gustavo Dudamel — if you believe the hype. Maybe you've seen his head on every single lamp post in Los Angeles over the past, what, year? He makes his Los Angeles debut as the new director of the LA Phil at the Hollywood Bowl with Bienvenido Gustavo!, a day-long party. He better not flub it up.
Schedule:
4pm – 8:30pm
* Andrae Crouch with an all-ages gospel choir
* Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) with the Silverlake Conservatory Ensemble
* Herbie Hancock with the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts Jazz Band
* David Hidalgo and Taj Mahal with Los Cenzontles
* Cuban pianist Alfredo Rodríguez
* YOLA – EXPO Center Youth Orchestra, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel
BEETHOVEN Ode to Joy
* Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel
BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 9
* Plus Fireworks!
But then, see, another kind of history is being made in Eagle Rock, when the humongous Eagle Rock Music Festival occurs on the East Side. This festival, which consumes much of the town, is filled with music from all parts of the LA musical world. In fact, if Dudamel wasn't already occupied, we'd urge him to check out Eagle Rock in order to understand the diversity of LA's musical landscape.
Not enough choices? Marianne Faithfull is at Royce Hall. Marianne Faithfull!
Sunday? Sleep during the day, Yorke at the Orpheum in the evening. Yo!
