Blossom gives artists a trustworthy alternative in the music marketing industry by focusing on long-term growth, not short-term wins.

The music industry has an unfortunate reputation for caring more about transactions than it does the artists that drive its continued success. Marketing and publishing companies, in particular, sometimes take more than they give, leaving musicians with little of the proceeds they generate. Mark Allen and Michael van der Roest, the co-founders of the music marketing and long-term strategy agency Blossom, decided to change that.

Rather than take advantage of its clientele, Blossom helps artists grow the right way by combining honest guidance and real music marketing systems that focus on building lasting fanbases rather than chasing empty, and ultimately ephemeral, metrics.

Through those systems, Blossom has worked with artists of all shapes and sizes, including Duckwrth, Goo Goo Dolls, Munnycat, Big Time Rush, New Kids on the Block, Cliftun, Janelle, Kroll, Omar Apollo, Mel Fine, and Yoke Lore.

Background and Industry Experience

Mark and Michael started the company after seeing for themselves how transactional the music industry could be. They noticed that many marketing agencies cared more about what artists could do for them instead of what they could do for artists, and in their eyes, that approach missed the point of what music advertisingshould be about.

Fortunately, both men had the knowledge, skills, and experience to make positive changes to music promotion. They bring more than 20 years of experience across event promotion, booking, labels, artist management, publishing, sync, and marketing, giving them the perspective they need to look beyond metrics alone.

Approaches to Artist Development

Blossom recognizes that many artists, whether they’re from the indie scene or part of a major label, didn’t enter the industry to focus on figures like streams, views, or campaign numbers. Artists make music to share their art with others and make a living from it so they can continue to bond with fans without financial distractions.

To this end, Blossom supports artists in ways that not only address metrics like streams or campaign numbers but also build real fans, trust, and income over time.

The company emphasizes the importance of utilizing marketing tools and strategies that emphasize sustainable audience growth and artist development. This means that Blossom intentionally and meaningfully cares about the artists they work with after a campaign ends, as those campaigns would have little value if their benefits ended with them.

As an example, Blossom’s website development and social media engagement services help independent artists, record labels, and artist managers alike learn how to grow their brands so they can do so even after they finish working with Blossom.

Campaign Strategy and Long-Term Planning

Part of what has made Blossom successful as a music marketing agency is its dedication to process, innovation, teamwork, and transparency. Alongside co-founders Mark and Michael, the team also includes Kelly Franks, Marketing Director, Andrew Wilson, A&R Director, and Shelby Kazen, Director of Advertising, who contribute to the company’s artist-focused marketing and campaign development efforts.

The founders describe some of the company’s most meaningful milestones as helping artists grow sustainable fanbases, expand touring opportunities, and build more consistent income streams over time. They also view Blossom’s ability to adapt through changing market conditions and refine its long-term subscription model as an important step in the agency’s development.

Throughout every step of their projects, Mark and Michael make sure to stay open to new ideas and collaborate with their partners without keeping them in the dark while doing so. In practice, this looks like adapting to new developments in the marketing industry and asking clients exactly what they want from their partnership with Blossom.

Strenuous as these efforts may seem, they’re important because they differentiate Blossom from much of the rest of the music industry’s tendencies toward hype and making unrealistic promises. Both Mark and Michael have been on either side of the marketing industry, so they know what they would want from a music advertiser as artists. This perspective keeps them grounded and, perhaps more importantly, consistent in the face of an industry that’s in constant motion.

Perspectives on Sustainable Music Marketing

In the marketing industry, it can be easy for marketers to lose sight of the forest for the trees. When so much of the industry defines success through narrow and sometimes arbitrary metrics like campaign numbers, it’s difficult for artists to find routes toward sustainable growth that they can feel beyond numbers alone.

Founded by people who have had similar experiences, Blossom works to provide artists with a trustworthy alternative in music marketing. Its music marketing systems and long-term strategy focus on building lasting fanbases that extend well beyond its campaigns, and for artists that want to see their audiences develop in meaningful ways, that approach can make all the difference in the world.
