Jeff Lam’s story is one of resilience, determination, and a deep-seated desire to give back. Born in a Red Cross refugee camp on the Cambodian-Thai border, Jeff’s early life was shaped by the generational trauma of his parents, who survived the brutal Cambodian genocide in the 1970s. As Cambodian refugees, Jeff’s family faced the harsh realities of life in the U.S., where opportunities were scarce, and the odds were stacked against them. Despite these challenges, Jeff refused to become just another ‘statistic.’
Determined to break free from the cycle of poverty that often traps first-generation immigrants, Jeff worked tirelessly, eventually graduating from college and landing a prestigious consulting role at Ernst & Young. There, he honed his business skills by advising Fortune 500 companies and gaining insights into the highest levels of corporate strategy and operations. But Jeff’s ambition didn’t stop there; he leveraged his experience to start his own consulting firm, which thrived under his leadership.
As his consultancy flourished, Jeff reinvested his earnings into real estate, acquiring properties across California. It was during this time that a friend approached him with a proposal that would change the course of his life—to use his real estate assets to provide housing and care for developmentally disabled individuals. The opportunity to combine his business success with a mission to help others resonated deeply with Jeff, especially as he reflected on the life his parents had carved out in America. “If my parents had made a left turn instead of a right turn, I have no idea where I’d be today,” Jeff often says, underscoring his gratitude for the opportunities he’s had. This sense of thankfulness drove him to co-found Dignity Living, a venture that would allow him to give back in a meaningful way.

Dignity Living is dedicated to creating home-like environments for developmentally disabled men and women aged 18 to 55. These individuals, referred to as consumers rather than ‘patients’, are provided with 24/7 care that goes beyond basic needs. Dignity Living’s model focuses on fostering independence through everyday activities like grocery shopping, cooking, and paying bills – tasks that, while routine for many, are pivotal in helping these individuals lead fulfilling lives.
The homes operated by this organization are meticulously designed to be warm, inviting, and professional. Instead of using outdated or donated furniture, Jeff ensures that every home is freshly renovated with modern furnishings and an open-concept layout. This attention to detail is what makes Dignity Living unique; creating an environment where residents feel valued and comfortable – a stark contrast to the often gloomy and institutional settings that one would think of.

Since its inception, the organization has grown steadily, with two homes currently in operation and a third one on the horizon. The company is nearing capacity with seven residents, but Jeff’s ambitions extend far beyond just filling homes. He envisions expanding Dignity Living’s footprint, not just to provide more homes but to inspire the entire industry to elevate its standards. “We want to do more than just good; we want to help others do good as well,” Jeff explains. He hopes that setting a new benchmark for care will ultimately improve the quality of life for millions of Americans.
Looking ahead, Jeff also dreams of giving back to the Cambodian-American community, helping to break the cultural shackles that have held back so many from achieving their full potential.
