Halloween is without a doubt the ultimate food-driven holiday for kids. Between dressing in ridiculous costumes and getting massive amounts of free candy, there isn't much not to love.

However, in Los Angeles, with its massive Mexican population, there is another holiday with a multitude of seasonally appropriate treats–sweet and savory alike–to enjoy: Dia de Los Muertos. An amalgamation of Catholic and indigenous Mexican traditions for honoring the dead, Day of the Dead falls on November 2nd, just after Halloween and All Saints Day, but is celebrated throughout Los Angeles in various ways in October and early November.

This Saturday, October 24th, the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach is hosting Buen Provecho, a cooking class featuring traditional Dia de Los Muertos eats.

Between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM attendees will learn to make pan de muerto, the delicious spiced and corn-thickened chocolate drink atole and other traditional dishes. You can sign up for the class here ($35 general admission, $25 for museum member) if you'd like to learn how to cook up some of this stuff at home. And if you can't make it, keep an eye out for photos and a recipe from the class early next week.
