67-Year-Old Man Fatally Struck in Bicycle Crash near Tulloch Dam Road

OAKDALE, CA (December 5, 2022) – Friday morning, Leanda Lopez was involved in a bicycle crash that left Bruce Velthoen dead.

The accident took place around 10:40 a.m., on Highway 120 near Tulloch Dam Road on November 25th.

Investigators say Velthoen was riding east on the south shoulder of the highway. There, he turned left directly into the path of an oncoming 2005 Subaru that was traveling at about 55-60 miles per hour.

In attempt to avoid colliding, the driver of the Subaru swerved right. However, the cyclist turned back right and struck the vehicle. The impact of the collision ejected Velthoen from his bicycle onto the road. 

Responding paramedics pronounced 67-year-old Velthoen, of Modesto dead at the scene.

Following preliminary investigations,  police did not consider drugs or alcohol to be a potential factor.
