From Greek amphitheaters or Shakespeare’s Globe to the bright lights of Broadway or your local auditorium, the magic of live theater has been integral to human culture for thousands of years. However, despite significant technological progress and its unique resonance throughout history, the theater has remained mostly unchanged at its core. Going to a play today can feel pretty much the same way it did decades ago, something that doesn’t happen with other mediums such as film and TV, which have been evolving steadily over the years and have undergone major transformations in the digital age. This might be about to change.
Aptly titled “Judgment Day”, the musical created by metaverse visionary Tony Parisi is set to be an event of reckoning for live theater as we know it today. The musical will bring disruptive technologies like web3, non fungible tokens (NFTs), virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR) to create a new form of live theater experience.
“We have new tools at our disposal to change how people experience the stories we want to tell, both in terms of scale and engagement,” says Parisi, who not only envisioned the technical aspects of the play but also wrote the libretto and score 15 years ago. “It is now possible to create a new form of theater by using these tools, one that will be more accessible both geographically and financially, and also much more immersive, interactive, and collaborative.”
In addition to his storied career in technology, Parisi is a lifelong musician and a Berklee College of Music alumnus who is returning to his artistic roots. Parisi released the concept album for Judgment Day on major streaming services in early 2023, in partnership with producer Gregg Leonard and a repertoire of talented artists. But that was just the first step in an ambitious roadmap that Parisi has for the project. An NFT collection featuring exclusive songs and bonus content was also recently launched featuring visuals by international artist Marina Berlin. Each NFT will grant its holder access to unique token-gated live events and additional content/perks depending on how many and which kind of NFTs they hold.
“The NFT campaign is all about bringing utility to fans and creating new ways for them to interact with the cast, characters, producers, and creative team,” explains Parisi, referring to how token holders are able to access signature events, join an exclusive online community, and even become part of the project’s advisory council or ‘Tribunal’. “NFTs allow us to add perks as the development of the project evolves, while also connecting the physical aspects of it with any new technologies or experiences that emerge over time.”
Beyond enabling fan engagement and community building, Parisi sees the new technologies of web3 as a means of actually financing and producing the live show. A portion of the proceeds from the NFT project is going directly to pay for the show’s development, and Parisi is already in early development via a partnership with Double Eye Studios, an award-winning immersive theater production company specializing in virtual and augmented reality. Parisi, the Double Eye team, and a cast of hired performers recently held their first virtual table read, a critical step in theatrical development– funded via the NFT campaign.
Parisi and Double Eye also have big visions for the live show, including the use of advanced technologies such as virtual and augmented reality, projection mapping, NFT-based access to characters, live online participation, and staging that eschews the traditional “proscenium” model of live theater in favor of more immersive and free-flowing experiences. Immersive theater productions like Sleep No More have been leading the charge for the last few decades; Parisi and Double Eye hope to build upon such advances to further the state of the art.
From his role in the inception of 3D graphics to the latest developments in VR, Parisi is no stranger to pioneering innovation. He holds a rare grasp on both creative and technical frontiers that are what sparked his long-standing vision for Judgment Day, which has already been cemented as the first musical launched on the blockchain. And by expanding the concept of the stage to move beyond the limitations of physical reality, a project like Judgment Day could change how we think about live performances and what it means to experience them.
“The metaverse is uniquely suited for a project that is all about reinvention as it effectively renders limitations like space and time obsolete, and connects artists and their communities worldwide as never before,” adds Parisi. “We are working as a team with our fans, our collector community, and our production partners to bring about what could be a big step forward in theater history. If we succeed, an entertainment revolution might be just about the corner.”
While the idea of moving live theater away from the physical stage might seem quite daring to some, it actually represents a return to its most basic principle: storytelling. Before grand theaters became the rule, storytelling was an intimate and communal experience focused on using every tool at your disposal to communicate emotions, ideas, and experiences. The only question remaining is: will Broadway be ready?
