A Los Angeles judge granted Britney Spears the right to choose her own lawyer as she attempts to end her conservatorship.

Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny made The decision Monday, as Spears’ longtime court-appointed attorney, Samuel D. Ingham, requested his resignation.

“I’m here to get rid of my dad and charge him with conservatorship abuse,” Spears said in the Monday court hearing. “Their goal was to make me feel crazy and I’m not.”

Spears asked for the right to choose her own attorney on June 22 as she broke her silence on the 13-year conservatorship for the first time.

Soonafter Spears spoke, Bessemer Trust filed its resignation, saying it was under the impression that the conservatorship was voluntary and Spears’ testimony made it clear that it was not.

Britney’s mother, Lynn Spears, submitted a motion asking the court to allow Britney to choose her own lawyer.

“Now, and for the past many years, Conservatee is able to care for her person and in fact has, inside of the parameters of this conservatorship, earned literally hundreds of millions of dollars as an international celebrity,” the motion read. “Her capacity is certainly different today than it was in 2008, and Conservatee should no longer be held to the 2008 standard, whereby she was found to ‘not have the capacity to retain counsel.”

Protesters from around the country made their way to the Los Angeles courthouse, holding “free Britney” signs and chanting, “Hey, hey! Ho, ho! The conservatorship has got to go.” Some shared their personal stories with conservatorships, while others expressed their love and support for the pop star.

Another “Free Britney” march will occur on July 18 as Spears’ superfans continue to rally for the end of the conservatorship.
