A new collaborative book organized by artist, author and designer Karrie Ross, pays tribute to that singular feature of the early days of the pandemic, the toilet paper shortage.

At a time when bathroom tissue was seen as a rare commodity and the difficulty in acquiring it and/or extreme hoarding of it became emblematic of both real disruption and absurdity at the highest level of social anxiety, Ross did what she does best — she asked artists about it.

The project called for artwork using one 4 x 4-inch sheet of toilet paper, mentioning that it could be, “painted, folded, drawn on, basically anything they wanted, but only one sheet,” and the results came rolling in.

Ranging from expressive drawings to neatly painted abstraction, inventive sculpture and interpretive responses to both the material and the circumstances, the images are collected in a print-on-demand book that pays tribute to creature comforts and creative catharsis.
