Gary Brooks Faulkner, the 52-year-old construction worker arrested in Pakistan for trying to kill Osama bin Laden, was born in Los Angeles, according to a Colorado TV report.

Many news reports have identified Faulkner as a California resident. But family and friends say he hasn't lived here since he was 10 years old.

Initial reports said he was carrying a pistol, a 40-inch sword, and a book with Christian teachings, which frankly made him sound more like a Coloradan than a Californian.

The Denver Post reported that he has been arrested several times on

burglary and larceny charges.

Faulkner's sister told the New York Daily News that he is on kidney dialysis and probably “wanted to do one last thing for his country before he died.”

“My brother is extremely religious since his troubled youth,” she said. “He's not crazy.”

When Pakistani authorities asked Faulkner if he seriously thought he could find bin Laden, he reportedly answered “God is with me, and I am confident I will be successful in killing him.”
