You probably know that if you hit someone with your car in a fit of anger, you could be prosecuted for assault with a deadly weapon, and more.

But did you know that a bicycle could be a deadly weapon, too? The Santa Monica Police Department today announced that an L.A. man, 38-year-old Rocky Martin, was sentenced to three years' “formal felony probation.” For this, according to a statement:

On June 24, 2012, Martin was riding his bicycle eastbound on Santa Monica Boulevard at the Third Street Promenade when he failed to stop for a red light and struck a pedestrian that was in the crosswalk. The collision resulted in the pedestrian receiving serious injuries.

Martin pleaded guilty to ADW, police say. Now he also faces 30 days of community service, according to the department.

Oops. Seems like much of the attention on bad actors in L.A. traffic has been on motorists. But it turns out bike riders can be jerks, too.

While L.A. City Hall has been bending over backward to appease the cyclist community, the Santa Monica Police Department has no bias, apparently.

According to the SMPD:

The Santa Monica Police Department is committed to educating the public on traffic safety and enforcing traffic violations. During the months of April and May, motor officers issued 86 citations to bicyclists …

Two wheels or four, you gotta be safe. And sane.
