Today's double-bill of Harvey and Donnie Darko may be the most inspired pairing since Vasectomy and She's Gotta Have It. In Harvey (1950, directed by Henry Koster), Jimmy Stewart reprises the beloved role of Elwood P. Dowd, which he made famous on Broadway in Mary Chase's 1944 play. Harvey is Elwood's 6'3″, time-traveling rabbit friend whom no one but Elwood can see. Elwood's sister thinks he's nuts and tries to get him put in the crazy house before realizing that changing him would just make him like every other clod in the world. Donnie Darko (2001, directed by Richard Kelly) stars Frank the invisible rabbit, who warns Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal) that the world will end in just under a month. Frank tells Donnie all about time travel (at the Aero!) and Donnie begins to understand his role in the vast scheme of things as he weighs his own life against saving those of his loved ones. An eerie, elegant cipher about life and death, it's the perfect Easter Sunday metaphor for the risen dead and the chance to do something important with life even beyond death.
