Beverly Hills shoppers can buy fur, bespoke suits, brand new Bentleys and even rare cheeses from around the world. But to get a certain kind of medicine — medical marijuana — they have to trek to nearby Los Angeles.

City officials want to keep it that way.

A proposal to permanently ban pot shops from the gilded city was introduced at the Beverly Hills Planning Commission this week and will likely head to the City Council for approval Feb. 15, according to the Beverly Hills Courier (PDF).

The city already has a temporary law on the books banning weed sellers, an ordinance that will expire April 22, according to the paper.

While no one has tried to open a pot shop in B.H., there are plenty of choices very close by, including to so-called “Green Mile” along Pico Boulevard east of La Cienega Boulevard and a smattering of shops on South Robertson Boulevard.

City officials think that bud retailing isn't exactly simpatico with the upscale nature of Beverly Hills retailing.

The Courier:

“The city wants to avoid the potential dangers these operations can bring in both crime and the potential to change the image of … the city as a friendly, safe and smart place to live and work.”
