Have you ever watched Pirates of the Caribbean or Master & Commander and thought, “I want to sail like that”? If so, head down the 110 to San Pedro and learn how to sail a tall ship (a big, badass boat with a large crew) with the L.A. Maritime Institute. LAMI owns Irving Johnson and Exy Johnson, the official tall ships of L.A. County. The boats were built to bring kids out on the ocean, but the crew is mostly made up of adult volunteers, with a few paid experts aboard to make sure nothing goes wrong. LAMI volunteers teach kids (mostly at-risk youth) from all over L.A. about teamwork, discipline, marine life, navigation and physics, along with the mechanics of sailing. It's a great way to get out on the ocean and give back to the community at the same time.
