For vegans and the lactose-intolerant, Vromage is the place to live out your cheese fantasies. There are piles of “veganzola” (the most popular item), brie and camembert, smoked gouda and spicy cheddar, all made from nut milk, seeds and olive oil. The shop, located in a strip mall just east of the Sunset Strip, offers tempting slabs of mozzarella and pepper jack to put on a grilled cheese sandwich or quesadilla. While it's not hard to find vegan cheese–topped dishes at spots such as Real Food Daily or Seed Kitchen, or from online distributors and specialty supermarkets, Vromage will let you sample from its extensive selection. Owner Youssef Fakhouri grew up in Casablanca and Paris and trained as a chef, and he uses traditional cheese-making techniques to ferment and shape his nondairy cheeses. The shop also sells pizzas and open-faced sandwiches featuring his hand-crafted cheeses.
