Talk about being theater-close. Now it can be right outside your front door. After 19 years of leasing space in Glendale, A Noise Within has found a permanent home — with lots of neighbors. It’s precedent-setting: This may be the first mixed-use development of housing and a classic repertory theater company under one historical roof. The north side of the former Stuart Pharmaceutical building — a landmark midcentury complex listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designed by famed architect Edward Durrell Stone — currently houses 188 apartment units as well as the original, restored oval swimming pool, cabanas, a gym, and modern clubhouse with baby grand piano and wet bar. By fall 2011, the south side becomes a 300-seat theater with educational facilities. Just think: During intermission, instead of standing in line for the bathroom, you could take a whiz at home. 3360 E. Foothill Blvd., Pasadena; anoisewithin.org; thestuart.com. —Heidi Dvorak
