Tucked away in the shadow of Burbank's sea of entertainment studios is the L.A.-area haven for dark, alternative culture. Hyaena Gallery is more than an art gallery — it's an emporium filled with the most intriguing finds from the underground. Amidst the almost overwhelming collection of art, you'll find a healthy amount of work by locals who reference horror classics, as well as those with a style that's just plain creepy. Independently released CDs and comic books, often locally made, fill the store's shelves. There are pieces here to fit every budget, too. Fans of James Bonner can purchase his frightening sculpture based on The Thing, as well as his affordable, sculpted Edgar Allan Poe candles. Check out the art vending machine, too, where you can score cool pieces for one $5 token. 1928 W. Olive Ave., Burbank. (818) 972-2448, hyaenagallery.com.
