Walking into the Golden State feels a bit like stumbling into a '60s-era beachcomber's seaside surf shack, one that sells everything from teensy bikinis and pyrite jewelry to handmade notebooks and log-shaped ceramic pot pipes. A third-generation Californian, shop owner Stephanie Addis sells only things that are unique and authentic to the state. “The store is like a story, a context for the goods we sell,” she says. The former fashion stylist opened her eponymous, state-slogan store back in 2009, and she chose Venice as its location because of the neighborhood's legacy as a diverse, bohemian arts haven with a Wild West vibe. As far as the inspiration behind the store itself, Addis says: “I had this crazy, adventurous childhood, always on boats or motorcycles all over California. … The Golden State is an expression of my life here.” 564 Rose Ave., Venice, 90291.
