Using the word “bargain” in conjunction with sushi or sashimi usually isn't a good thing. The concepts generally don't belong together, except when it comes to Yama Seafood Market in San Gabriel. A narrow market dominated by a display case of fish on one side and a wall of Japanese grocery items on the other, Yama is a true mom-and-pop shop. Tuna, yellowtail and salmon are always available, and Mr. Yama will cut the fish and prepare a sashimi plate for you as you wait. You can also pick up uni, tamago or salmon roe; yellowtail collar and other fish are available as well. Packaged sushi rolls and everything else you need to make your own sushi at home also are sold here, but be prepared for lines. The word about Yama is definitely out.
