For years, this rehearsal space by the L.A. River was known as Satellite Studios (no relation to Silver Lake nightclub the Satellite), until new owners bought it in 2010 and renamed it SoundBite Studios. But the staff still retains the old helpful, relaxed vibe, and SoundBite remains a relatively inexpensive hideout to crank it up alongside such fellow practitioners of music as Ozomatli, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Creed Bratton, The Mars Volta, Talib Kweli, Concrete Blonde and The Airborne Toxic Event. Hourly rates in the studio's six rooms range from $16 to $22 (depending on time of day and size of room), and amps, effects pedals and drums also can be rented. Perched near the river between the 2 and the 5 freeways, the one-story building is tucked away in Frogtown (officially called Elysian Valley), on the edge of Silver Lake and Elysian Park, just a short drive from downtown and Hollywood.
