The past several years have seen smaller record stores such as Vacation, Origami and Permanent Records benefiting from the mounting interest in vinyl. But after going strong for more than 10 years, Amoeba continues to be the go-to spot for collectors of all genres. Not only is the store constantly well-stocked with new and vintage records in everything from house to jazz, but it's also one of the few places you can still buy new CDs on the day of their release. The DVD selection upstairs is easily the most expansive in the city, attracting a wide variety of collectors, in particular those embedded in the sci-fi and horror genres. Unlike at many record stores, the staff is extremely helpful, consisting mainly of aspiring musicians doubling as specialists in their own respective genres. The hulking exterior may be intimidating to some, but once you find a particular corner of the store that speaks to your taste, your home will be littered with Amoeba's signature bright yellow plastic bags. 6400 Sunset Blvd., Hlywd. (323) 245-6400, amoeba.com.
