Forget your backyard barbecue — there's real campfire cooking going on up at Adams' Pack Station in the Angeles National Forest. Located at Chantry Flat in Big Santa Anita Canyon above Arcadia, Adams' Pack Station resupplies weekend hikers and uses mules to pack in goods to campers and residents of isolated cabins. But on the third weekend of every month, local Eric Woodyard dons cowboy gear and roasts pork shoulder in a Dutch oven over warm coals. The Carolina-style pulled pork on a Dutch crunch roll is tender, juicy and just a bit spicy, with vinegary coleslaw underneath all the smoky meat. Order one with blue cheese, or sit back with a beer on the pack-station porch and remark on the simplicity of campfire-cooked pulled pork, deep in the Angeles National Forest.
