While I could gush for eons about Melissa Schade's every dance class at the Sweat Spot in Silver Lake, let us focus our attention on her warm-up, which doubles as a vision quest. Schade leads her Thursday and Saturday morning classes through an intelligent unfolding of isolations, extensions, crunches, planks and pliés to the likes of Yaz, Led Zeppelin, Perfume Genius and Atoms for Peace. But it's not so much the movements as it is Schade's own rich, expressive intensity that inspires the dancers to dive so deeply into otherwise unexplored cavities of their bodies and to linger there — indulging in internal walkabouts executed to a sick batch of Diplo beats. You emerge transformed, with an expanded awareness of the resentment you're still harboring toward your mother. Then again, that could just be the open hip flexors and Thom Yorke's hypnotic bummer lyrics talking.
