For the 200,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States every year, mastectomies can be an unfortunate reality. Fortunately, the knowledgeable staff, one-on-one care and inviting atmosphere at Laura's Corset Shoppe eases the often traumatic post-mastectomy bra-shopping experience. The store has called Glendale's bustling Brand Boulevard home since 1922 (that's a whopping 85 years, but who's counting?). Current owner Haley Trivioli has been at Laura's helm for 25 years, and has formed close relationships with emotional post-mastectomy clients. “Sometimes they cry,” she says. “Sometimes I cry with them.” At her store, which looks like your aunt's inviting yet kooky living room, women can choose fabrics, fits and colors, thanks to Trivioli, who has made it a point to move away from the bland style generally associated with post-surgery bras. With bras ranging in price from $45 to $70, she carries sizes 32 to 54 and top-of-the-line prostheses, which can be customized to individual skin color, size and nipple needs as well as vibrant post-mastectomy bathing suits. 232 N. Brand Blvd., Glendale. (818) 241-5616, laurascorset.com.
