In our style-conscious city, it's hard to find the middle ground between Supercuts and high-end stylists that can set you back half a paycheck. That's what makes Crop, an appointment-only, one-chair salon tucked away in the Garvanza section of Highland Park, such a gem. For only a little more than what you'd pay at far more impersonal haircut emporiums such as Rudy's, owner Deborah Kantner will give you a personal consultation, figuring out not just what you like but also how your hair naturally moves and grows out — then style and cut your new 'do to perfection. She uses only environmentally friendly products that haven't been tested on animals and treats her cozy salon almost like her living room, sometimes offering customers complimentary green tea and snacks and sharing the latest news from around the neighborhood. She runs her business solo and is often too busy to accept new clients, but call or email and you might be lucky enough to snag an appointment.
