Growing up in L.A., I have seen many shifts in car culture, from lowriders and hot rods, which have survived for decades, to fads like mini trucks. Whatever the latest trend, it will be on view at a car show — along with the “car show girl.” hired by shops or clubs as eye candy to draw attention, the girls add to a whirlwind carnival atmosphere out of a Fellini film. Some show up half-dressed to enter the ceremonial ass-shaking contest; others come simply to get the attention of gearheads who sometimes act as if they’ve never seen a woman before. Regardless of their motives, these girls are unsung heroes of an L.A. subculture built for speed, sex and style.
