It's never been easy for vegetarians and especially vegans to find good Mexican food. The most authentic Mexican restaurants tend to be meat-heavy and sometimes still use lard, and even vegetarian-friendly establishments prefer to slather everything with a lot of cheese and other dairy products. While a growing number of vegan Mexican places has opened in the past two years, such as West Hollywood's Gracias Madre, Leonor's Restaurant has always been more than a little ahead of the curve: The small, family-run hole-in-the-wall in North Hollywood has been serving vegan and vegetarian dishes since 1985, long before going veggie became a hip trend. Leonor's not only puts a healthful spin on traditional Mexican burritos, tacos and combination plates but the chefs also whip up Bolivian-infused dinners such as Dory's Petju, while the Forever Young Special Pizza is among the best veggie pizzas in L.A. No matter what you get, the food is so filling and fully satisfying that you'll need to lie down immediately afterward.
