“When we see customers happy, we get happy,” Hy Mart owners George and Mariam Eshoei chant in unison. As if on cue, lunch seekers file into the Mediterranean-fusion sandwich shop, beaming as they exchange pleasantries with the middle-aged married couple who seem to know them all by name. Hy Mart is a family business going 40-plus years strong: George buys fresh groceries for the shop every morning, and Mariam's sister Nadia works the register, schmoozing patrons. Hy Mart's nuanced Mediterranean cuisine is influenced by the Eshoeis' Armenian-Iranian heritage. Ben Eshoei, George and Mariam's son, introduced ample vegetarian and vegan options, as well as novel fusion concoctions. (He recently co-launched Aeirloom Bakery in Toluca Lake.) Classic falafel and chicken sandwiches are elevated with thoughtful touches such as Greek olives, avocado, lemon, basil and mint. And the gyro meat is deliciously redefined when paired with falafel in the Gyros Gone Wild wrap.
