Where else can you cram in 30 minutes of vigorous walking without encountering a single rude driver, red light, backing-out vehicle, searing sun, smog or downpour while at the same time eyeballing the window displays of Tiffany & Co., Neiman Marcus, L'Occitane en Provence and Burberry? Westfield Topanga Shopping Mall opens its doors daily at 6 a.m., long before the crowds or store clerks are even sentient. It's done solely for the benefit of mall walkers — people who glide past the darkened stores and gourmet food court set in a hospital-clean environment. The gigantic space itself is a trendsetter: The first enclosed mall in California opened in 1964, fueling what became our nationwide madness. The mall's fantastic $330 million renovation in 2008 would be wasted on just shoppers. 6600 Topanga Canyon Blvd., Canoga Park. (818) 594-8732, westfield.com/topanga. —Jill Stewart
