What is a legal high?

Legal highs are federally legal substances that are readily available online and have the ability to make you feel high or intoxicated. Delta 8 THC

Delta 8 THC is estimated to be around 50% the strength of Delta 9 THC, making it an ideal option for people that find Delta 9 THC to be too overwhelming. Generally speaking, it provides a very relaxing, sedated buzz, but it is possible to find more sativa-like effects in vapes that have been mixed with more invigorating terpenes.

Delta 9 THC

Delta 9 THC is what we all used to know simply as THC. When people talk about marijuana or high-THC cannabis, this is the THC you should expect to experience.

It is much stronger than other Delta THC’s, so is better suited to more experienced users (and those wanting to get stoned af). Depending on the strain or product, Delta 9’s effects range from couch-lock (literally, locked to the couch) to a more motivated and cerebral buzz. Either way, it will likely leave you feeling fairly intoxicated and possibly moving (and thinking) in slow motion.

Delta 9 does affect different people in different ways though. For example, I know people who take Delta 9 and want to go on adventures or clean the house. I, on the other hand, prefer to do as little as possible when I’m high on D9.

• Can elicit psychedelic effects (especially when taken ingested)

• Can cause anxiety and/or paranoia in some people

HHC

HHC is one of my favorite “new” cannabinoids to enter the market. Estimated to be around 70% as strong as Delta 9 THC, HHC is the Goldilocks cannabinoid for many people, providing a happy high that’s not too overwhelming, but very noticeable and euphoric.

The overall effects are pretty powerful in both mind and body, offering all-over-body relaxation while lifting you up emotionally, inducing lots of happy, positive thoughts. It’s not quite as euphoric as Delta 9, but it’s also never made me feel anxious.

The high doesn’t seem to last as long as any of the Delta’s, but if you take one or two gummies, then you can easily keep yourself topped up with a disposable vape.

Mushrooms

Depending on the type and amount of magic mushrooms you take, your experience can vary quite a lot. Taking a small amount will most likely provide you with a warm and pleasant feeling throughout your body. Your visual perception of the world may be slightly altered with colors becoming more vibrant and it may appear as if everything around you has a life of its own.

You may also notice a mental shift as most people feel a new appreciation for life, finding deeper meaning in even the smallest and simplest of tasks.

The more you take, the more pronounced the visual and mental effects become. Things around you may start moving and warping, you might see lights, shapes and colors in people’s faces and bodies, and you also might experience a rushing feeling in your body (sometimes accompanied with a short period of nausea).

Up the dose again and you can expect full-on hallucinations, literally seeing things that aren’t there.

Even the most experienced users respect the power of mushrooms and approach taking them with caution as these unpredictable other-worldly effects can last between 6-8 hours.

This is why your setting is incredibly important. I prefer to take them in small groups of close friends in a place I feel safe and comfortable. I do also find it fun to venture out, to take in the world around me (hiking is awesome), but the last thing you want is for the trip to be stronger than expected and end up getting lost in the woods.

On the other hand, I do also know people who love taking mushrooms at events and festivals, to enhance the visual and human experience, but these days I find that setting a bit too intense when I’m tripping hard.

To give you an idea of exactly how changed you might feel on shrooms, you should probably also know that you might not feel the same after the experience.

A 2011 study by John Hopkins Medical School involved 51 participants taking a single high dose of psilocybin. Their results showed that nearly 60% of participants displayed lasting personality change for at least a year after taking it.

Kratom

Kratom is another fun, federally high you should know about, but you should be aware that this is the one substance on our list that can be highly addictive. So, don’t be an idiot and limit your use, please, for all our sakes.

At lower doses, kratom acts as a stimulant, providing energy and lots of chitchat, not dissimilar to cocaine. At higher doses, it’s said to be more euphoric and sedating, more similar to heroin.

I tried the white kratom and opted for a low to medium dose and, as expected, found the effects to be incredibly energizing and uplifting. I don’t have any personal experience with kratom at higher doses (or heroin for that matter), but have read many customer reviews which lead me to believe that it works as expected.
