Welcome to the anti–Guitar Center — or, as one employee calls it, “L.A.'s most metrosexual guitar shop.” It's nothing but chill vibes over at Old Style Guitar Shop, the brainchild of Reuben Cox. Cox is no musician; he's a photographer and a tinkerer. But he knows a heck of a lot about wood. Which is why he started making beautiful, custom guitars and selling them out of what appears to be the living room of a dumpy wooden shack on Hoover Street, just south of Cafecito Organico. The small, delightfully unpretentious store also sells vintage guitars — some for as little as $250 — and repairs instruments at a reasonable price. And it hosts shows. The Nationals played here, as did Rodrigo Amarante and Soak. If that all sounds like hipster central, it is. But these are your nice, friendly neighborhood hipsters. Don't bother coming in the morning. This shop opens at the crack of 1 p.m.
