If you covet those elegant Edwardian togs on Downton Abbey, or wish you could see Game of Thrones' furs and armor up close, the galleries at downtown's Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising are the place for you. FIDM's free exhibits bring actual costumes from your favorite films and TV shows off the screen and within reach (although you can't touch). You will always be amazed at how tiny the people who wear these clothes must be. Annual exhibits include both Emmy-nominated and Oscar-nominated costumes (the Emmy display runs through Oct. 19). And FIDM not only has famous frocks but ones that show the history of fashion as well. The galleries provide real-life samples for FIDM students to learn from. FIDM is trying to acquire Helen Larson's amazing collection of clothing and accessories, and has been staging small shows of its highlights. Also through Oct. 19, you can see 1920s eveningwear in “Gatsby's Women,” a gorgeous selection of beaded beauties by Lanvin, Chanel and others. Take a step back in time, then return to the present with a stop at the gift shop, which offers high-end pieces, or around the corner at the FIDM Scholarship Store, which has bargain prices for items designed by FIDM students. 919 S.
