It’s hips, not upper lips, that make Mustache Mondays one of the liveliest, lushest gay dance clubs in town. The amiable energy at this party never quits, and the floor always feels like a warm (sometimes too warm) and inviting place, no matter what your sexual preference is, or how fierce your dance moves may be. Mustache actually hopped around various downtown venues quite a bit before finding its perfect home at La Cita, and the Mexican dive–turned–hip hub’s layout (tiny dance floor, tinier stage and huge outdoor patio) provides tons of crevices for prancing, posing and vogueing to the sexy excess of DJ Josh Peace and Total Freedom on the decks. The Mustache mix is a beautiful thing: Latino fem-bots, foxy fag-hags and tranimals (a gander at hostess Fade-Dra Phey’s wild frocks before the weekly midnight show alone is worth the cover charge, usually $5). Ultimately, though, it’s creator Nacho Nava’s continuing quest to book big-buzz dance acts with maximum sass — Cazwell, Ebony Bones, Sam Sparro, Rye Rye, SSION, NGUZUNGUZU — that makes Mustache a Monday must. 336 S.
