With their brown glass jars and hand-printed labels, the candles at Pommes Frites Candle Co. smell even prettier than they look. When Kristen Pumphrey moved from Austin to Long Beach in 2011, she and husband Thomas Neuberger made candles out of their two-bedroom home. They've since moved into a larger warehouse in downtown L.A., but the candles are still lovingly handmade. They use a soy base because “it's a natural and nontoxic product that we can touch with our hands every day.” At just $16 a pop, these are a steal compared with other fancy-pants candles, and they make a great gift (right now we're burning their best-selling Teakwood & Tobacco). Find them at Milk, Poketo, Reform School, Urban Radish and many other great L.A. boutiques (or at etsy.com/shop/pommesfrites). —Sascha Bos
