Want to keep bees but don't know how? Husband-and-wife beekeepers Rob and Chelsea McFarland teach you at their HoneyLove Bee Mentoring Workshops, held in their hilltop bee sanctuary in Moorpark. Sessions are fluid, unstructured and very much hands-on. You will learn as much from other attendees as from the McFarlands, who have been working to legalize urban beekeeping in Los Angeles. Practicing organic, nonchemical apiary methods, they will teach you how to properly set up, smoke and inspect a bee box; how to harvest honey; how to acquire bees; where to buy equipment; and a million other things you never knew you needed to know about the world's most fascinating insect. Protective suits are required. If you don't have one, give the McFarlands a call. They usually have a few to lend. 3566 Sunset Valley Road, Moorpark. Enter near equestrian center, take dirt road through farm, park at base of hill. (424) 625-8BEE, honeylove.org. —Gendy Alimurung
