Before the surrounding residential area and hills were invaded by studio people and the attendant blocks of pricey cafés and insane housing prices, Mitchell Litt Home in Sherman Oaks was a big reason people with money came to Ventura Boulevard. Think oversized armoires from the South of France and a set of massive, carved walnut chairs upholstered in buttery leather with sticker-shock prices. But these collectors and suppliers to L.A.'s splendiferous mansions always make sure to sprinkle their huge, two-story shop with small pieces that the rest of us can afford, from a classy embossed-leather serving tray for $48 to a cowhide-covered box with a brass knob for $150. That makes it one of the over-the-top treasure hunts in L.A. 14918 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks, 91403. (818) 789-8900, mitchell-litt.com. —Jill Stewart
