Conventional wisdom tells us that ballet is one of those things that you have to learn as a child. (Putting on a tutu and pointe shoes for the first time as a grownup just feels wrong.) The techniques take years to master, and adult beginners often are ignored in open classes, left to flounder and flail on their own. That's why Catherine Round of C. Round Ballet Works has a cult following among dancers who came late to the game, as well as those who can grand jeté or plié with the best of them. Round provides detailed corrections without leaving behind the newbies, who get their fair share of her attention in class. She's been teaching in L.A. for 15 years, usually at Lineage Performing Arts Center in Pasadena or Burbank Dance Academy. Focused in the Vaganova method, her classes are stringent but accessible, and many of her students perform in her annual benefit show for California Hospital Medical Center.
