Grand Central Market downtown is adding new dining options at breakneck pace. In just the last ten months, we've seen the additions of Sticky RiceValerie at Grand Central MarketG&B CoffeeHorse ThiefDTLA Cheese and Eggslut. In the coming weeks Olio Pizzeria, Wexler's Deli and The Oyster Gourmet are also set to open. And today comes the announcement that Berlin Currywurst will also be opening a stall in the market.

Berlin Currywurst already has locations in Silver Lake and Hollywood, as well as a cart that operates on the Santa Monica Pier. But the downtown market seems like an especially good fit for owners Hardeep and Lena Manak. “In Germany, currywurst is street food,” Hardeep Manak says. “You get it at the market or the subway station. So to us this feels like taking the German street food we serve back to its roots.”

The Manaks will also be adding an element to their Grand Central Market location that they don't have at their other locations: breakfast. Manak says he's most excited about the Fleischkaese Broetchen, a German breakfast meatloaf served on bread with an over easy egg on top.

“This is what I grew up eating for breakfast in Germany, and I haven't seen anything like it anywhere else in L.A. or California. It's very hard to find real German breakfast,” Manak says. They'll also be serving a sausage hash called bauernpfanne and breakfast sandwiches served with their regular sausages.

The Manaks are designing their stall to look as German as possible, using subway tiles meant to evoke the subway stations where currywurst might be eaten in Berlin.

The couple hopes to open their shop at Grand Central Market in the next few weeks. “I have a birthday in March,” Manak says. “So I'm hoping this can be my gift to myself. We're shooting for mid-March.”
