It has been a good year for Danny Elfman. Not only is his instantly recognizable theme song for The Simpsons heard untold times each day around the world as the animated series enters its 25th year of potency, but now everyone gets to jump up and down about the 25th anniversary of Elfman's score for the 1989 movie Batman. The American Cinematheque, in tandem with Modern School of Film founder Robert Milazzo, presents a screening of Tim Burton's film, followed by Elfman talking with Milazzo about his Batman score — how it straddles the campy and the sinister, how his travels overseas to different cultures continue to inform the rhythms of his work, the hell of hearing loss, and why DAH dah DAH dah always beats out dah DAH dah DAH when it comes to his inimitable musical phrasing.
