simplethings: Key Lime Pie

Boasting the motto “Sandwich, Pie, Done” as well as the sweet and savory pies of chef Carrie Cusack (who you may know from the Eagle Rock, Silver Lake or Sherman Oaks farmers markets), simplethings sandwich & pie shop bakery opened this morning on W. Third St., offering more competition for Mid-City West's reigning queen of the high-end delis, Joan's On Third.

simplethings offers 14 sandwiches ($8-$11.50) including inventive combos like the Thanksgiving Sandwich with house-roasted turkey, cranberry chutney, jalapeño cornbread stuffing and sage gravy on a michette roll from Dolce Forno Bakery and a vegan po' boy featuring pan-seared, cornmeal-crusted tofu.

Really, though, the bakery is an homage to Cusack's obsession with pies. “Growing up, I was always that weird kid who wanted pie for their birthday and not cake. I grew up in the Ozarks, where pie is a huge tradition,” she says.

On the savory side, simplethings will sell individual pot pies in five flavors ($10) like chicken curry, steak and lager vegan shepard's pie. The daily assortment of sweet pies is even more ambitious, with nine choices served up daily including the three standards: blueberry, peanut butter and Missouri mud pie. In addition, simplethings will serve Fosselman's ice cream, which Joan's no longer carries. Let the rumble begin.
