Gay Pride weekend offers a heaping of great GBLT grinders all over town (check the last graph of the Nightranger column for some of the best). Here, our dance picks for straight (but not staid) club sets: VELVET (formerly at 7969, now known as Voyeur) was a club known as much for its eye-popping (“almost naked”) go-go dancers as for its wacky mix of rock, electro and disco. It was an anything-goes kind of gathering both on the decks and the stage. Now that it's back — debuting at Bordello this Sunday — expect more of the same and then some, including its notorious wet T-shirt contest, with cash prizes and DJ Bruce Perdew mixing in old faves and new raves. 901 E. First St., dwntwn; Sun.,June 13 and every Sun. thereafter; free pass at EvilClubEmpire.com. Though it shut down more recently, THE ROOTDOWN has been much missed, too. For three Thursdays in June, the funky soul roots shall be laid down once again, strictly vinyl, at the original stomping grounds, the space formerly known as Gabah. If you're reading this June 10, it's on tonight and the next two Thursdays (June 17 and Juen 24), with all the crew — Miles, Loslito, Sloe Poke, Ervin Arana, DJ Jedi and of course, the spirit of the club's dearly departed DJ Dusk. 4658 Melrose Ave., L.A.; $5 all night.
