Sweeter than you'd think: cherries from Mark Boujikian Farms
This time in May at the Hollywood Farmers Market showcases a just a tease of stone and summer fruits to come, and a fleeting spring treat that's already on its way out.
Several market vendors have the earliest cherries, which are sweeter than we expected. Murray Family Farms had the best selection, while Mark Boujikian Farms from Fresno County, which otherwise mostly sells dried fruits and nuts, put out tasty containers of plump dark cherries. Some growers have apricots, but no peaches or nectarines yet.

Though our part of the world gets only a mild lilac bounty, you'd never know it looking at the gorgeous piles surrounding Ha's Farms from Tehachapi's stand. The apple specialists have been bringing in their lilac booty for the past couple weeks. This Sunday was the peak, but they say this favorite springtime floral treasure might stick around next week, too. Generous bunches in different shades of purple, some with a lovely white border around the edges, were $9. Get them while the getting's good.
And one last quick mention: The Farmer's Kitchen doors are open for curious looky loos. After many delays — back in September, there were reports that it would open in November or December — service and business apparently starts in earnest within the next week or so. The project will include a cafe and retail space, as well as teaching and training programs through Sustainable Economic Enterprises of Southern California. Glad to see the space is looking shiny and ready.
