Q:

I’ve been nostalgic for old-fashioned carnitas. Any suggestions?

A:

Porky’s has been pumping out carnitas on the Whittier Boulevard strip for as long as anyone can remember — not subtle, heart-healthy carnitas, but the hard, crunchy, piggy kind, oozing sweet grease, screaming the glory of 1960s East L.A. as loudly as 200 transistor radios tuned to KRLA. Antojitos Denise’s, over on Olympic, may serve a slightly more sophisticated brand of carnitas, but when you’re in a certain kind of mood, only Porky’s will do. Porky’s, 4560 Whittier Blvd., East Los Angeles, (323) 261-5532.
