L.A. Public Health said the COVID-19 cases, deaths and hospitalizations decreasing over the past week could mean the county has “likely passed the peak of Omicron transmission.”

The county reached a peak in COVID-19 hospitalizations last week, seeing a high of 4,814 on January 20. As of Friday, there were 4,192 COVID-19 hospitalizations. Public health officials added that COVID-19 related hospital admissions also dropped by 10% over the past 7 days, falling from 615 new admissions last week, to 552 this week. As of Thursday, 17% of hospitalizations have needed ICU treatment.

A consistent drop in daily COVID-19 cases has also occurred, with the peak seeing 45,076 new cases on January 13, with cases being in the 20,000 range over the past 6 days.

“Data is also showing the spread of Omicron has had a disproportionate effect among certain residents over the past two months, with the risk of hospitalization significantly lower for people who are fully vaccinated and boosted,” L.A. Public Health stated in a press release, Thursday. “Through January 15th, fully vaccinated and boosted individuals were 28 times less likely to be admitted to the ICU for COVID-19 than those unvaccinated, showing that vaccines continue to provide the best protection against severe illness.”
