Nathan Fillion is no stranger to comic book conventions. Man or woman, any geek will swoon at the mention of his name. In reverence to his most popular sci-fi series, Firefly, a lot of us still refer to him as 'the Captain.' Seamus Dever (Detective Kevin Ryan), Jon Huertas (Detective Javier Esposito), Tamala Jones (Lanie Parish), Molly Quinn (Alexis Castle) and executive producer, Laurie Zaks joined Fillion at the convention to promote the fourth upcoming season of Castle.
Castle is about Richard Castle (Fillion), a famous mystery novelist who stirs up trouble here and there at the NYPD, forming an unorthodox partnership with Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic). Together, they solve crimes and also experience dangerous situations together mixed with Fillion's well-known charming flair.
The last season ended in a cliffhanger with someone shooting Beckett at the cemetery during an attempt assassination.
"She's dead," Fillion answered, deadpan, about Beckett's fate before breaking into laughter. "What can I say that won't spoil the beautiful first episode [of season four]? A lot of things happened that can't be undone. Words were said, bullets were fired. There's going to be repercussions."
He revealed his idea for a Castle-centric episode. "I am constantly pitching an episode where we see life through Castle's eyes. I think Castle is a little off as far as his perception goes. Very, very clever man, but I want to see the world as Castle sees it-- A kind of rose-colored glasses, all the women find him irresistible, all the guys find him super cool and do everything he says. He's tough. There's theme music when he walks."
Quinn, who plays Castle's daughter in the series, delighted everyone when she showed up in cosplay as Captain Malcolm Reynolds, Fillion's character from Firefly. The actress seems to be quite invested in her character Alexis Castle and had surprising insights on how she believed Alexis will act towards her father in season four.
"Now that my dad is putting himself in all this danger," Quinn said, speaking for Alexis. "How can I live my life and be okay with myself? She's not supportive. She's not. You have to think that that bullet went by her and her grandmother's head just as well. She saw her dad throw himself and endanger his own life to save this woman. So it's scary for her and she may have to assert some tough love. It's not going to be as fluffy anymore."
The new season welcomes actress Penny Johnson who will be stepping into the role of as the new Captain and asserts leadership over Castle and the detectives. According to Fillion, Jones' character will hardly approve of Castle hanging around her detectives and there will be conflict.
"Ryan and Esposito, at first, it's pretty hard for them to accept this new captain," Huertas said. "They're kind of scared of her because she's a whole different type of leader, type of captain. She comes with a different section of the NYPD, the internal affairs, so she's a little more hard lined. She is more worried about her political career is going next than serving the people. I know she's out for justice but it's not as passionate as Captain Montgomery was."
The new season will not be entirely dealing with pure serious drama. It was revealed that a Ghostbusters themed episode will be aired during October. Producer, Zaks, had even expressed her wish to have the original Ghostbusters cast to do a cameo for it. I am quite certain we all want to see Fillion running around with Ghostbuster gear and trapping ghosts.
