The painter Grace Lynne Haynes takes a joyful path through some fraught topics. Her exuberant palette, elaborate sense of pattern and striking, quirky taste in beauty combine to unpack the intersections of race, gender, American history and the arts of Europe and the African diaspora. Her paintings and collage-based works embody in the fusion of their aesthetic notes and mixed materials the very multifaceted existence she describes from her lived experiences. Her exhibition of new work, “Shades of Summer,” follows on a year that included being named one of Forbes magazine’s 30 Artists Under 30, and a fellow at Kehinde Wiley’s Black Rock Senegal Residency in Dakar.
