The folks at La Luz de Jesus have been putting on this juried group show annually for 27 years now. It has gone through themes ranging from Dia de los Muertos to a focus on the personal art of successful commercial artists, all of which feed directly into the lowbrow, pop surrealist, graphics-infused and outsider-friendly ethos of the gallery's brand. Now, the gallery's biggest and farthest-ranging edition to date (in terms of medium, style and geography) marks its 17th year under the rubric of “Laluzapalooza: Everything but the Kitschen Sync” in a ginormous group show with almost as many puns as paintings and peculiar objects. From Jessica Joslin's gothic taxidermy confections to Victor Castillo's darkly reimagined childhood watercolor scenes to Steve Diet Goedde's cryptic and humorous erotic photography, this salon-style visual smorgasbord has never been accused of being under-hung. It's worth braving the vertigo for your chance to discover a new generation of the rising alt-culture stars the gallery is known for launching. And don't worry if it gets hot or crowded inside — when it comes to big La Luz events, the sidewalk scene is every bit as fascinating as the walls. La Luz de Jesus, 4633 Hollywood Blvd.; Fri., March 1, 8-11 p.m.; thru March 31; free. (323) 666-7667, laluzdejesus.com.
