An El Segundo cop was being called a hero this week after he jumped into a burning car to rescue the woman inside.

It was such a dangerous move that Officer Armando Rodriguez was still in the hospital after he suffered from minor burns and smoke inhalation following the rescue, Lt. Jaime Bermudez told LA Weekly:

“He hasn't been cleared to return to work,” Bermudez said.

The woman in the car was also in stable condition at a hospital, he said. The 22-year-old sustained major trauma, the El Segundo Department stated.

It happened about 6:10 p.m. on Sunday on Aviation Boulevard near El Segundo Boulevard, according to the El Segundo Police Department's account:

… A 4-door sedan collided with a power pole.

Upon impact, the car became engulfed in flames and the driver was entrapped inside the vehicle. El Segundo Police Officer Armando Rodriguez arrived on scene and immediately pulled the driver from the burning vehicle.

The fire was extinguished by the local fire department. But the damage to the power poll was done, and the intersection was closed overnight for repairs by Southern California Edison, police said.

It's not clear what made the car, which appears to us be an older Lexus, hit the pole. The cause of the collision was still under investigation, and witnesses were asked to call detectives at 310-524-2200.

The officer's dash cam didn't capture the crash, but it got the daring rescue on tape for your enjoyment.
