77-Year-Old Cyclist Killed During Charity Bike Ride in Griffith Park

LOS ANGELES, CA (April 19, 2022) – Saturday afternoon, Andrew Jelmert died in an alleged hit-and-run crash on Crystal Springs Drive.

The incident occurred around 3:49 p.m., on the 4400 block of Crystal Springs Drive in Griffith Park.

Per reports, Jelmert was riding north when the driver of a northbound gray BMW sedan struck him and fled the scene.

He fell onto the roadway as a result, suffering blunt force trauma. Medics later pronounced the 77-year-old male cyclist dead at the scene.

The suspect, 37-year-old Jairo Martinez, was later found and arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter. He is currently being held on $617,500.00 bail.

Following preliminary investigations, police suspect the driver may have been impaired by drugs and/or alcohol. At this time, an active investigation is still currently ongoing.
