Many folks came of age perusing the no-holds-barred underground comic books that were spawned in the late '60s. Last Gasp, Kitchen Sink and Rip Off Press offered explicit, often side-splittingly funny forays into wild depictions of sex, drugs and violence from such creative pioneers as R. Crumb, Gilbert Shelton, S. Clay Wilson and Spain. Tonight a new generation of demented artist-writers is unveiled as Drippy Bone Books presents “Freak Scene: The New Freak Champions of Underground Comix.” More than a dozen masters of the maniacal will present samples at Synchronicity. A look at DrippyBoneBooks.com gives us a peek at some of their titles: F'real Real by Pat Aulisio features “black Santas, fart jokes, horse rape and the mutilated and mutated Lazy Orange Cat”; Human Storage by Peter Gray Hurley is a collection of “densely graphic and psychedelic as fuck” pencil drawings done while Hurley was incarcerated in an Arizona prison. Also on hand tonight will be Johnny Ryan, one of the country's sickest and most hilarious cartoonists. At tonight's exhibition, there will be original art, comix (the preferred spelling of the genre), zines, prints and posters. Saturday night will be an evening of literary lunacy with live readings by some of the “Freak Scene” contributors. Synchronicity, 713 N. Heliotrope Ave.; Fri., July 6, 7 p.m.; exhibit runs Thurs.-Sat., 1-7 p.m., thru Aug. 4; free. (818) 863-6528; SynchronicitySpaceLA.com.
